Salicylic Acid vs. Glycolic Acid for Ingrown Hairs: What Actually Works on Textured Skin
Both acids show up on every ingrown hair shelf, but they work through different mechanisms and suit different skin situations. Here is how to choose based on chemistry, not marketing.

Walk down any shaving aisle and you will find two ingredients dominating the ingrown hair category: salicylic acid and glycolic acid. Both are sold as solutions for razor bumps and trapped hairs, and both have legitimate evidence behind them. But they are not interchangeable, and for people with coily or tightly curled hair, the difference matters more than the packaging suggests.
Why acids help ingrown hairs at all
An ingrown hair in textured hair usually forms one of two ways. In transfollicular penetration, a sharply cut hair curls back and pierces the skin from inside the follicle before it ever exits. In extrafollicular penetration, the hair exits the skin, arcs over, and re-enters nearby. In both cases, the body treats the hair shaft as a foreign object, triggering inflammation, papules, and sometimes pustules. Over time, repeated inflammation drives post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, the dark marks that often outlast the bump itself.
Chemical exfoliants help by thinning the outermost layer of dead skin cells, the stratum corneum. A thinner, more evenly shedding surface gives a curved hair less material to pierce and makes it easier for a trapped tip to break through on its own. Acids also loosen the plugs of keratin and debris that can cap a follicle and trap a growing hair beneath.
Salicylic acid: the follicle specialist
Salicylic acid is a beta hydroxy acid, and its defining trait is that it is oil soluble. That single property explains most of its value here. Because it dissolves in sebum, salicylic acid can travel down into the follicle itself, exfoliating inside the pore rather than only on the surface. For an ingrown hair that is trapped under a keratin plug or sitting in a congested follicle, this is exactly where you want the exfoliation to happen.
Salicylic acid also has mild anti-inflammatory activity, which is a meaningful bonus. It is chemically related to aspirin, and at typical over-the-counter strengths of 0.5 to 2 percent, it tends to calm redness rather than provoke it. For skin of color, where every episode of inflammation carries a risk of leaving a dark mark, that gentler inflammatory profile is a real advantage.
The tradeoff: salicylic acid does relatively little for existing hyperpigmentation. It manages the follicle and the bump, but the dark spots left behind respond slowly, if at all.
Glycolic acid: the surface and pigment worker
Glycolic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid, water soluble, and the smallest molecule in its class, which lets it penetrate the upper skin layers efficiently. It does not follow oil into the follicle the way salicylic acid does. Instead, it excels at surface-level work: breaking the bonds between dead skin cells, accelerating cell turnover, and, importantly, fading post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation over weeks of consistent use.
There is also a mechanism specific to ingrown hairs worth knowing. Research on pseudofolliculitis barbae, the clinical name for chronic razor bumps, has found that glycolic acid appears to reduce the sulfhydryl bonds in the hair shaft itself, leaving hairs softer, straighter at the tip, and less able to pierce skin. In studies of glycolic acid lotions for razor bumps, participants saw meaningful reductions in lesion counts. This is one of the few topical ingredients with evidence that it changes the behavior of the hair, not just the skin around it.
The tradeoff: glycolic acid is more likely to sting, more likely to irritate at higher concentrations, and it increases sun sensitivity. On melanin-rich skin, over-aggressive use can trigger the very hyperpigmentation you are trying to fade. Start at 5 to 8 percent, a few nights per week, and always pair with daily sunscreen.
So which one, and when
A practical way to decide: match the acid to your dominant problem.
If your main issue is active bumps, congestion, and hairs trapped under the surface, salicylic acid is usually the better first choice. Its follicular penetration and calming effect address the mechanical problem directly.
If your main issue is dark marks from old ingrowns, or you shave frequently and want to soften regrowing hairs, glycolic acid earns its place. Its pigment-fading capacity and its documented effect on hair shaft rigidity make it well suited to prevention and cleanup.
Many people ultimately use both, and that is reasonable, with one caution: not at the same time on the same area. Layering two acids in one session multiplies irritation without multiplying benefit. Alternate nights, or use salicylic acid on active bumps and glycolic acid on healed, discolored areas.
What neither acid can do
No topical acid changes the curvature of the follicle, which is the root cause of ingrowns in textured hair. Acids manage the consequences. If bumps are severe, scarring, or forming keloids, that is a signal to see a board-certified dermatologist, because prescription options and hair removal strategy changes go further than any over-the-counter bottle can. Used realistically, though, these two acids remain the most evidence-backed tools on the shelf, provided you pick the right one for the job.
